Puh-lease. I've spent 40 years in software engineering. You know how many times I've been unemployed during that tenure? Plenty. It's always been part of the territory. Especially in the early 90's. In one year, I ended up unemployed twice! If you're in start-ups, which I was then, it's particularly volatile. You can sink at any moment. At larger firms you can get hit as part of a cost restructuring and organization realignment. It happens. A lot.
