Ask HN: How to Get Fiber Installed

The only ISP we have is Cox, and they only offer Copper Cable with low speeds. I've tried filing FCC availability complaints, but they were fruitless to get Cox to install Fiber at our neighborhood. I've also attempted to do the same for ATT and another local ISP who offers Fiber within 1 mile of us without success.

Is there anything else I can try to get fiber at our house? I read about a person setting up their own ISP due to lack of Fiber accessibility, but I AFAIK there isn't government grants offering the same incentives that Michigan does. I live in Louisiana, Baton Rouge area. I've tried the T-Mobile 5G wireless internet, but the speeds are insufficient to stream 4k connect even with a cat 6 wired connection.

I used to work with the dude in Michigan who started his own neighborhood fiber ISP. Good dude, super sharp, he had loads of experience in the ISP space. You don't do that kind of thing by getting consumer-priced fiber and then running it around the neighborhood, what he did was far more than that.

At the end of the day, you can't force someone to install consumer-priced fiber to your home. There's just no law requiring companies to provide you with fiber access.

Most streaming 4K is only 25mbps, FYI. Cox's lowest plan appears to be 100mbps downstream. Are you not getting even 25mbps from Cox?

do you have line-of-sight to one of those neighbours within 1 mile who can get fiber?
